Malaysia's Indie Music Industry

Last Saturday I went to Alexis in G.E Mall to meet up with an old friend.

At the same time I managed to watch the Songwiters' Round which featured people like Pete Teo (who apparently won 3 AIM awards recently. Erm, that was really something I didn't know), Reza Salleh (who can can sing and holy crap most of his songs are really MEANINGFUL to me. I basically dig his vibe. Oh, and he's kinda cute too. Hehe.), Azmyl Yunor (who is a freakin' awesome lyricist) and Jerome Kugan (who's voice is so melodious and is probably an acquired taste for many).

It was overall a really good catching up session with my old friend Michelle while listening to awesome indie music by these people. Michelle's girl Izzy also did a performance when the open mic session began. She's got such a sweet voice it's really worth listening to. And then there was Mia Palencia. BLOODY HELL she can sing!!! Amazing lyricist as well. She was once in a jazz band called Double Take and I totally always loved them but I didn't know that she's now doing her own thing. Nonetheless, still AWESOME!

Anyways, the point is, there are some REALLY good Malaysian musicians out there. I'm amazed I haven't heard this stuff on the radio. I mean, it's so damn good!!!

So what do we have to do to let big conglomerate Radio stations like Astro play these artists music?

I mean, they're pleasant to listen to, so why can't they play it? I mean, Malaysia isn't THAT big you know. I believe there is still that chance for many talented artists to make it. We're not in the States where the amount of talented people is triple the amount you know what I mean?

Like it's so damn hard to make it big in Hollywood. But it can't be THAT hard trying to make it in KL can it?

So why can't the big record labels in Malaysia sign them? Is it cause they're afraid that these artists won't bring much profit for them?

Or perhaps these artists don't want to sign with any labels and remain in the indie scene. Or do they?

Or is it the people in Malaysia? Do they not enjoy this kind of music? Am I one of those minorities in Malaysia who enjoy this shit?

Anyways, this post is just to show my support towards these people. You guys ought to check them out too. I like their music because it's so, KL. It really is. I feel the Malaysian vibe when I hear it. So nice. So home.

So awesome.
